This is one of the most popular ways to buy used auto parts from your local junkyard. It’s also one of the most fun, especially if you are into old cars. A junkyard is like an oasis of the cars of yesteryear just sitting there waiting to be recycled, part by part. If you know what you are looking for and how to tell the difference between good, usable, and poor condition, then you can score some great parts for a seriously good deal.
Not all cars in a junkyard are in beat up shape. Many have been totalled in an accident just a couple of years after they rolled off the line. While some of the parts on these cars may be of no use, there are still plenty of parts in like-new condition. If you know what you want and have the tools to strip it, you will walk away with a great deal.
Make sure you bring the right tools in an easy to carry tool bag. You don’t want to go to pull the perfect part and realize you don’t have the right tools to pull it. As junkyards have cars from all makes and models, it’s helpful to have both a full SAE and Metric wrench set.
